Drosera murfetii is a Tasmanian endemic and close relative of D. arcturi. The plants were formally separated in 2014 by Lowrie.

D. murfetii is a cold adapted species and inhabits the west and south-west Tasmania. In many locations, it grows alongside D. arcturi. Drosera murfetii can be recognised by its sizable non-carnivorous leaves at anthesis, few glandular leaves that adopt an erect morphology and 4-5 cerise coloured stigmas (although some morphs have white stigmas). In comparison, D. arcturi has reduced non carnivorous leaves (or none at all), several active glandular leaves at the same time and 3-4 white coloured stigmas. Drosera murfetii is also typically larger in size than D. arcturi.
